We Bid Farewell to Osman Gazi as It Set Sail for the Black Sea
We bid farewell to Osman Gazi, Türkiye’s first floating production platform, at a ceremony held in Filyos on Saturday, 17 October 2026. The platform will double domestic natural gas production in the Black Sea.
The ceremony, for which our President sent a video message, brought together our Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar; Abdullah Güler, Chair of the AK Party Parliamentary Group in the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye (GNAT); Mustafa Varank, Chair of the GNAT Committee on Industry, Trade, Energy, Natural Resources, Information and Technology; Osman Hacıbektaşoğlu, Governor of Zonguldak; the General Managers, executives, and employees of TPAO and TP-OTC; and residents of Zonguldak.
A Video Message from Our President
In a video message sent for the ceremony, our President stated: "Today, we are opening a new chapter in our energy history. Osman Gazi is the first factory in our Blue Homeland, the maritime embodiment of our Türkiye Century vision. With a length of 298.5 meters, a width of 56 meters, a depth of 29.5 meters, and a crew of 140, it is a floating energy fortress."
A New Era in Domestic Natural Gas Production
Speaking at the ceremony, our Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, said commissioning Osman Gazi would increase the Sakarya Gas Field's total daily natural gas production capacity to 20 million cubic meters in 2027. Minister Bayraktar said: "Our domestically produced natural gas, which currently serves 4 million homes, will double in volume and reach 8 million households."
Emphasizing that they were ushering in a new era in natural gas production and moving one step closer to the goal of full energy independence under the Türkiye Century vision, our Minister stated: "Türkiye is now becoming a country capable not only of exploring for and discovering natural gas, but also of processing it offshore and delivering it to shore."
First Flare to Be Lit on Osman Gazi This Year
Minister Bayraktar described Osman Gazi as a major engineering achievement and noted that the platform also demonstrates the level of operational capability Türkiye has achieved in offshore oil and natural gas exploration.
Referring to the ongoing preparations for the platform's commissioning, our Minister stated: "Our work continues. God willing, our goal is to light the Sakarya Gas Field flare at Osman Gazi's flare tower before the end of this year, hopefully in December."
After the speeches, the Osman Gazi Floating Production Platform departed Filyos Port in Zonguldak for the Sakarya Gas Field, where it will operate in the Black Sea.
Osman Gazi Floating Production Platform in Figures
The Length of Three Football Pitches: Our Osman Gazi Floating Production Platform is about the length of three football pitches, measuring 298.5 meters long, 56 meters wide, and 29.5 meters deep.
21 Separate Facilities: Our platform, which houses 21 facilities on its topside, underwent extensive modifications in Filyos ahead of its deployment in the Black Sea. To meet the Sakarya Gas Field's specific requirements, we rebuilt 11 facilities. Of these, seven were manufactured in Türkiye, and four were built abroad. The remaining 10 facilities were modified to meet the field's technical requirements and integrated into the platform.
642 Kilometers of Electrical Cables: Our platform contains 642 kilometers of electrical cables, with approximately 6 kilometers installed each day during the maintenance and preparation phase. A total of 7,000 people were involved in preparing Osman Gazi for operations in the Black Sea, including installing about 30 kilometers of piping.
170 Kilometers Offshore: Operating approximately 170 kilometers offshore, Osman Gazi will serve as a natural gas processing facility, delivering processed gas to the national grid ready for use. Our platform will operate at its designated offshore location for 20 years.
We wish our colleagues every success in their Black Sea operations.
