SAKARYA GAS FIELD PROJECT

Energy reaching from the depths of the Black Sea into the future

We continue to work with the same enthusiasm to increase existing production capacity in the Black Sea and to achieve new discoveries.

Energy reaching from the depths of the Black Sea into the future

On 21 August 2020, we made a natural gas discovery of 320 billion cubic meters in the Tuna-1 well. This discovery lies approximately 170 km off Filyos and at a depth of 2,150 meters in the Black Sea. As TP-OTC, following the discovery, we completed drilling in the Tuna-1 well in October 2020. We revised the reserve volume in the well by 85 billion cubic meters, updating it to 405 billion cubic meters.

This was also recorded as Türkiye’s first ultra-deep-water discovery.

In June 2021, with a new reserve of 135 billion cubic meters in the Amasra-1 well, our total natural gas reserves in the Black Sea reached 540 billion cubic meters. In December 2022, following a reevaluation by an independent institution, these reserves were updated to 652 billion cubic meters. In the same period, with a 58 billion cubic meter discovery in the Çaycuma-1 well and a 75 billion cubic meter discovery in the Göktepe-3 well in May 2025, our total reserve volume in the Black Sea reached 785 billion cubic meters.

We continue to operate in the Black Sea with the same drive and utilize 40,000 data collection points to achieve new discoveries and to remotely control the entire system.

Project Significance

Why are we different?

  • The largest natural gas discovery made by Türkiye to date

  • The largest natural gas discovery ever made in the history of the Black Sea

  • The largest offshore natural gas discovery worldwide in 2020

  • The largest seismic survey campaign ever conducted beneath the Black Sea

  • The largest offshore natural gas project worldwide in terms of distance to shore, water depth and reserve size

  • Türkiye’s first ultra-deepwater production field

  • The first ultra-deepwater reserve discovery by Türkiye’s national offshore energy fleet

  • The first natural gas production project realised by Türkiye’s national offshore energy fleet

  • The world’s first subsea application of advanced electro-hydromechanical technology

Project Phases

Step-by-step towards new achievements

We have planned the development of our Sakarya Gas Field Project in three phases:

//01

Phase 1

We reached first gas in 2023, with a minimum initial production of 2.8 million m³ from the natural gas discovered in August 2020. Within the scope of Phase 1, we completed the construction of the Seabed Production Facility, Pipeline and Onshore Processing Facility and commissioned them in April 2023. We achieved a production level of 9.2 million m³/day from 12 wells.

Today, we process the natural gas produced 170 km offshore at our Onshore Processing Facility with a capacity of 10 million m³/day and transfer it to our national gas grid.

//02

Phase 2

This phase includes 10 additional new wells, a new subsea production system infrastructure, a floating production unit (FPU), and the construction of a new pipeline to the onshore receiving facilities. The natural gas produced from the 10 new wells will be transported to the floating production platform via the new subsea infrastructure, processed, and then delivered first to our onshore facility and subsequently to the national gas grid. The additional production capacity resulting from these works will be 10.5 million m³/day.

Phase 3

In the third phase, we plan to drill 27 new wells, build a new subsea production system infrastructure, deploy a second floating production platform, and construct a new pipeline to the onshore receiving facilities in order to increase total capacity by 20 million m³/day.

Across Phases 1, 2, and 3, we aim to achieve a net production capacity of approximately 40 million m³/day from a total of 49 wells.
