The hidden power of drilling operations
A drilling fluid is a specialized liquid used while drilling a well. In the industry, it is often referred to as “drilling mud.” This fluid performs multiple critical functions simultaneously during drilling. It supports the wellbore by preventing the collapse of the formation, cools the drill bit to prevent overheating, and carries cuttings such as rock and soil to the surface. It also ensures safety by controlling the uncontrolled release of subsurface gases and liquids.
Drilling fluid is an indispensable component for both efficient drilling progress and the safe completion of operations. Although unseen, it is the system that sustains the entire process and forms the foundation of a successful drilling operation.
In offshore drilling, selecting the right drilling fluid is one of the most crucial factors for success. Determining the most suitable fluid system directly impacts both the success of the drilling operation and the overall operational cost. At TP-OTC, we successfully execute drilling fluids and solids management services using world-class tools and methods, in accordance with the planned schedule and budget.
Field-based analysis, optimal fluids, uninterrupted operations
With our experienced technical team, we assess the needs of each drilling site individually and perform site-specific analyses tailored to the geological and operational requirements of each well. From our extensive pool of materials and systems, we determine the most suitable drilling fluid (water-based or synthetic) and the necessary chemicals. Adequate volumes are prepared in advance of drilling, and adjustments are made to the system during operations in response to changing field conditions.
By using the right fluids and leveraging our field expertise, we ensure the continuous progress of operations, even in unexpected situations. This approach allows us to provide our clients with safe, sustainable, and cost-effective drilling solutions.
Safe completion fluid applications
After a drilling operation is successfully completed, completion operations are initiated to prepare the well for production. At this stage, TP-OTC plays an active role. We provide all necessary technical support for the preparation and application of completion fluids, filtration control, wellbore stability, prevention of formation damage, and achievement of targeted production efficiency. The completion fluids are carefully selected based on the well’s characteristics and applied in a controlled manner on-site.
Success reflected in numbers
Since 2019, we have used a total of 300,000 barrels of Spike drilling mud in the surface drilling of 44 wells in the Black Sea. This volume is equivalent to approximately 19 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
To prepare this massive amount of mud:
72,000 tons of barite were used, equivalent to the weight of about 12,000 elephants.
1,300 tons of bentonite were consumed, roughly equal to the load of 300 large trucks of soil.
For the lower and upper completion operations carried out in these drilled wells, approximately 660,000 barrels of brine were prepared. This is enough completion fluid to fill about 42 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
To prepare this amount of completion fluid:
26,000 tons of salt were used, equivalent to the weight of approximately 5,200 elephants.
